Your original Russian name is Suzanna. It sounds very unique and appealing. Why do you go by Susan, like millions of other Americans?

My original name is Susan, as my mother gave it to me and as it stands in my birth certificate. Since I grew up in a family of first-generation immigrants and speak Russian, I sometimes pronounce Susan in a Russian manner – Suzanna. I like to have fun with my name, regardless of what millions of other people like to do with theirs.

We are all born beautiful, and if we are lucky, we die looking old. What’s the point in trying to prove that one is more beautiful than the other during life?

Yes, it is true that all babies are beautiful and a lot of people look old when they die. Well, there is something very important which happens in between birth and death and it is called life! In this life we all have an opportunity to express many talents that we have. Beauty is one of them. I express it  to inspire others for success, charity and volunteering for a good cause. The beauty contest is not about proving that you are more beautiful than another, it is about expressing your talent in the world and creating positive emotion in people! Most importantly, it is the beauty on the inside that makes a person beautiful on the outside.

It takes committed effort to stay beautiful (such as exercise, diet, discipline). So, does it mean that being beautiful means being better than others in some respect?

Not at all! To me it means being respectful to yourself and your body. A person’s first impression is their appearance, which most remember very well. Therefore, people have a choice of what they eat, what activities they do and the way they plan their daily life. I like to be as healthy as I can, by eating organic foods, exercising instead of watching TV and using self control in every aspect.

Does your potential boyfriend have to try harder because you won the beauty contest? How did your dating standard change after the victory in the contest?

I believe that a potential boyfriend must be himself! I would like him to respect my opinions, body and goals. There’s nothing extraordinary he can do to make me love him but, he can do something to make me fall in love with him for the rest of my life.

Worrying about external looks is the number one reason for depression among teenagers. Does the beauty contest help or make it worse for them?

Beauty pageants show women the potential they have in them. Everyone has a choice of how they feel and what they do to make them feel that way. When I see women in great shape, it inspires me to work hard and improve myself because there is always room for improvement. Therefore, it does not make it worse for them, it just shows what they can be if they discipline themselves.

Do you like to give advice about healthy lifestyles and beauty to your peers? Have you seen any improvements in their habits?

Of course, that is one of my favorite things to do! I give healthy lifestyle advice to everyone I come across. I’ve noticed that many of my friends whom I gave advice to became more confident in themselves and are now competing for the same title I currently have. I am so happy for them and know they can achieve anything they set their mind to.

Is being beautiful your hobby, profession or a little cherry on top in your life?

Being beautiful is definitely a cherry on top! I am currently in the University of the state of California, Sacramento; studying for my degree in Business International. I plan to someday travel around the world and learn about different cultures, unite each one and do business together.
How do you feel when you see someone who is more beautiful than you?
Everyone is beautiful in one way or another. I do not like to compare myself to others because I know that beauty is on the inside and I can only be myself.

What should a woman do when her external beauty vanishes with age? Should we all just try as hard as we can to look attractive until the day we die?

Women should adjust to what nature does and be confident in the outer appearance no matter what. Wrinkles represent wisdom.

Are you proud to be Russian American? If so, why?

Absolutely! We are all immigrants from another country whether it is the 1st generation or the 10th. My parents came to America to give me an opportunity to have a better life and I choose to use that opportunity. As a European, I have a mindset of not only working harder but wiser also. I am currently running for Miss California USA, which will happen in November 21st live on NBC.
